Because cockroaches eat a wide range of food, including rotting garbage, it is believed that they spread a number of diseases to humans including salmonella and gastroenteritis as well as cause allergies. Cockroaches prefer to live in kitchens and other food preparation areas, so they can feed off food spills. They also like to hide in the cracks in walls, around water heaters and in gardens. Did you know there is only 6 families of cockroaches found worldwide, consisting of 4000 species. Australia has representatives of 5 of these families but with only 428 species present. Half of a the cockroaches in Australia can be found in the Blattidae family which includes both the native and introduced species.
